Hideo Shima was a Japanese engineer who was the driving force behind the building of the first bullet train. He was born in Osaka in 1901 and educated at the Tokyo Imperial University, where he studied Mechanical Engineering. Shima was a key figure in the development of the Shinkansen, and his work helped make the bullet train a reality. He died in 1998 at the age of 96.
